Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel review

Airport hotels are often an accommodation choice for a stay of convenience or a place you land due to an inconvenient disruption to your travel plans. But that doesn’t mean it has to be a lacklustre or boring stay. The Moxy brand has landed down under and the Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel is the first to make a splash in Australia. For us, the hotel was our destination as we had no plans to fly but despite no forward travel plans we thoroughly enjoyed the fun atmosphere of an overnight Moxy stay. We booked one of Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel’s accessible rooms so we could share a review.

Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel has reimagined airport accommodation, swapping functional business styling with a cheeky and fun vibe throughout. It almost feels like the holiday is starting before take off and perhaps it extends the travel feels if using the hotel as a stop before returning home. The first sign that Moxy is different to other airport hotels is at check-in, which occurs at the bar where guests are offered a complimentary cocktail or mocktail on arrival.

Keeping in mind guests visiting Moxy are usually only overnighting, rooms have been designed to be compact and functional. Entry to the accessible room is clutter free with hanging space replacing a wardrobe. It should be noted that the hanging space is a little on the high side for wheelchair users.

The bed is neatly tucked away in one corner of the room, freeing up circulation space but making only one side of the bed accessible to guests needing to transfer from a wheelchair or using a walking frame. For those travelling with a portable hoist, there is space under the bed for access with a safe also located here.

A mini-fridge, kettle and tea and coffee making supplies are available in the room.

To ensure the room remains clutter free, a small table and stool are folded and stored out of the way on the peg wall.

Bedroom facts – entry door to the room 87cm, bed height 62cm and under bed clearance 27cm.

A large door leads to the spacious accessible bathroom which is well designed. Grab rails are fitted throughout and towels and hanging pegs are at a lowered height.

A back rest is fitted to the toilet and there’s space under the sink for wheelchair access. As is often the case, there isn’t much room for a toiletry bag unless you are clever enough to have a bag which hangs from a hook rather than needing vanity space.

A fold-down shower bench is fitted to the wall with a height-adjustable shower wand beside. Depending on your arm length the bathroom amenities may be out of reach.

Bathroom facts – bathroom door clearance 87cm, shower bench height 47cm, toilet height to seat 47cm, toilet height to pan 45cm, under sink clearance 83cm.

If you are looking to get on top of your washing, or you’ve just spilled a drink on your favourite travel outfit, there’s a guest laundry with washing machines and dryers available.  Steamers are available in guest rooms but if you prefer an iron and ironing board, these are available in the guest laundry. Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel review - Have Wheelchair Will Travel

If you feel so inclined, there is also a guest gym near the laundry. I had no such inclination and instead chose to spend my time in the lounge.

Moxy’s lounge is a hive of activity. Sit back and relax with a book, drink or meal or have fun playing one of the many board games on offer. Jenga and Connect 4 seemed popular with families but Hubby and I took the chance to chat and reconnect over a delicious meal.

Comfy lounges and a chill atmosphere lure guests from their rooms to the lounge throughout the day and in the evenings.

Bar Moxy offers a menu to tempt and satisfy with salads, burgers and more substantial meals including pasta, steak and fish dishes. Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options are available.

If you don’t have time to lounge or just want a quick bite in your room, Moxy Pick Up is a hotel version of a convenience store with take away choices like salads, sandwiches, cuppa noodles and snacks.

A microwave and toaster is located here and free for guest use.

Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel is all about options and if you don’t have time to linger over a leisurely breakfast of hot treats, pastries and fruit, you can always grab a quick cuppa and a pastry from Little Baxters, the onsite cafe, to take away.

We took the slower start to the day breakfast option to extend our time at Moxy. The majority of the breakfast buffet is at a good height for all but some may struggle to reach the cereal dispensers. I’m sure Moxy staff would be happy to assist if that is the case.

General accessibility at Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel is excellent with a ramp leading from the the street to automatic glass entry doors to Bar Moxy where guests check in.

Moxy Airport Hotel offers multiple accessible rooms and accessible meeting event space making it worthwhile considering for conferences or events where both accommodation and an accessible work or meeting space is needed. The fun extends to the meeting spaces too so it’s sure to keep everyone engaged.

A free airport shuttle is available for guests who are able to manage a few stairs to get into the van. Due to the shuttle’s popularity it’s best to book your airport shuttle at the time of making a room reservation. The shuttle can also deliver you to the local train station which links you to Sydney’s CBD in minutes.

We were hosted for our stay at Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel but as always our opinions are our own.
