Given I am a Sydney resident it always feels particularly decadent to have an overnight stay in our beautiful city. So last week when I was attending a two day travel conference I felt particularly lucky to be able to book a last minute stay at the W Sydney hotel in Darling Harbour. I was the perfect opportunity to review the accessible accommodation at the W Sydney.

W Sydney hotel review
The W Sydney Hotel is well located in the popular Darling Harbour precinct of the city with a plethora of restaurants and entertainment right on the hotel’s doorstep. The five-star hotel is stylish with a twist of cheeky whimsy. With over 500 rooms this hotel makes its presence felt on the Darling Harbour scene, in a good way.

I booked an accessible city view room but on check-in I was upgraded to an accessible one bedroom studio with views of Darling Harbour. As it was only me on this trip I had room to party up a storm. No cooking was done in the well-appointed kitchen which includes a microwave, stove top, oven, full size fridge and crockery. Space has been provided under the sink and bench for ease of access.

The W Sydney’s accessible one bedroom studio offered spacious accommodation with good circulation space throughout all areas.
A new handbag sans measuring tape, meant that on this occasion I had to rely on a borrowed ruler from the hotel for measuring the accessibility. So, my measurements are true approximates but hopefully will be enough of a guide for anyone needing the access information.
Bedroom facts (approximately) – bedroom entry door 84cm ‘ish’, bed height 59cm ‘ish’ with a solid bed base.

It’s always special to stay in accessible accommodation with a view and the studio apartment’s windows gave my shark friend and I front row Darling Harbour people watching.

Adjoining the bedroom is an excellent spacious accessible bathroom.

The well-equipped bathroom features a shower bench, height adjustable shower and a wash basin which has space underneath for ease of access.

Grab rails, lever taps and a toilet fitted with a backrest are also included. A grab rail which can be raised or lowered is positioned beside the toilet for added stability for those that require it.
Bathroom facts (approximately) – bathroom door entry 82cm ‘ish’, shower bench 46cm ‘ish’ toilet height to seat 46cm ‘ish’ and to pan 43cm ‘ish’.

I didn’t even have time to sit on the plump seats or lounge but I did appreciate the lush furnishings and lounge room with flat screen television.

Entry door to the W Sydney accessible studio is 92cm ‘ish’

It certainly would provide exceptionally comfortable digs for a longer stay.

Lowered features in the accessible bathroom include large switches which operate just about everything including the blinds.

W Sydney oozes cool vibes in its shared spaces throughout the hotel. Statement light fittings, various styles of seating and windows that take advantage of the hotel’s location all add to the hotel’s appeal.

Just in case guests staying at W Hotel are jet lagged and struggling with the timezone, the W Sydney changes the carpet mat in the lift to give a gentle reminder of the time of day including good morning, good evening etc.

The attention to detail and the quirky elements around the hotel make it a fun and interesting stay. So much more than many five star hotels.

Unfortunately, the W Sydney’s indoor pool does not offer a pool seat or hoist. Access into the pool is via stairs.

I didn’t even have time for breakfast, so I feel I had the perfect excuse to miss the gym but I did take a look at the fitness facilities in the hotel. I’m clearly no expert so I’ll let the photo speak for itself.

W Sydney Hotel in Darling Harbour offers stylish, comfortable accommodation and a great accessible location. Having restaurants, entertainment and the ferry wharf within level wheeling or walking distance is a great advantage. If, like me, you are attending a conference at the International Convention Centre (ICC) it’s a an especially convenient location as it is a few minutes walk from the hotel.
My check out day was on Valentine’s Day and there was certainly many loved up couples arriving for a romantic getaway. The W Sydney is certainly a lovely spot for a stay or even for a drink in the bar.
