Peppers Silo Launceston review

Industrial chic meets five star luxury at Peppers Silo Launceston. Located on the banks of the Tamar River with lovely walks, restaurants and parkland nearby this is a stellar pick if you’re on the hunt for unique Launceston accommodation.

We loved the accommodation, location and the opportunity to meet Archie the Silo dog (the hotel’s resident pooch). Our family had two nights at Peppers Silo Hotel in Gorge View Rooms, one accessible twin and one king bedded non-accessible room which gave me the opportunity to review both.

Peppers Silo Launceston

We stay in a lot of hotels and sometimes it can feel like they are all a bit the same, particularly city hotels, but Peppers Silo in Launceston has really set itself apart from the mainstream. The hotel was developed in a converted grain silo and beautifully blends history with modern hotel rooms incorporating all the conveniences we look for when we travel. The clever design is also proof that history and accessibility can co-exist harmoniously with thoughtful design.

The curvaceous rooms do not inhibit circulation space and in the twin-bedded accessible room at Peppers Silo there is pleasingly plenty of space on either side of both beds for transferring from a wheelchair.

A king bedded configuration is available on request when booking.

Guess what? This accessible accommodation comes with a lovely view of the river. It’s always such a treat to wheel into a room and find this.

All features in the room are lowered and if you get tired of the view (impossible) there’s a flat screen television for entertainment.

Bedroom facts – entry door to room 86cm, bed height 61cm and under bed clearance 5cm.

Braeden never believes in downtime when there is a world to explore, but for those that do appreciate the opportunity to wind down and relax, there’s a super comfy chaise lounge by the window. Accessible rooms rarely have a lovely view so it would be great to sit and appreciate it.

The room’s adjoining accessible bathroom is well designed with a good amount of space for a wheelchair user, grab rails throughout, space under the wash basin and a shower bench.

If you are using the shower bench, the body wash, shampoo and conditioners are more than likely out of reach unless you have really long arms. This wasn’t an issue for us as we assist Braeden in the shower.

We hung the towels up on the lowered towel hooks and used the storage shelves for our toiletry bags.

Bathroom facts – entry door clearance 84cm, shower bench height 45cm, toilet height to pan 39cm and height to toilet seat 41cm.

One of the small details I love about many of the hotels in Tasmania, including Peppers Silo, is they are proud supporters of Tasmanian products and local businesses. A little bottle of local Tassie milk and tea was a welcome sight for this tea lover.

Peppers Silo King Bedded room (non-accessible)

We know that not everyone that reads our reviews requires accessible accommodation so I wanted to share the other room we had for our stay at Peppers Silo.

The non-accessible room was equally spacious and also offered views of the Tamar River.

The main difference in the accommodation is the bathroom which doesn’t offer the same circulation space and open plan of the accessible room above.

The non-accessible room has two cubicles within the bathroom for the toilet and shower limiting the circulation space in each.

As with the accessible room, we found this room to be comfortable and the bed was heavenly.

A cooked breakfast is a real treat for all the family so we eagerly headed to Grain of Silos each morning. Seated at a window table we enjoyed a variety of breakfast options while planning our day. Hubby and I were all about the eggs and Braeden and Amelia enjoyed the pancakes.

We were so happy with our choices we repeated them on our second morning.

It is important to book a table for breakfast, even if it is included in your accommodation package, as this restaurant is popular.

Hubby, Braeden and I also enjoyed a divine dinner in Grain of Silos one evening. Amelia didn’t join us as she was unwell. Tasmania does many things well but food has to be near the top of the list. If you are a foodie, or just someone who enjoys quality dining, you are spoilt for choice in this state and Grain of Silo is a top pick.

Accessible onsite parking is available in an open-air car park.

Archie the Silo Dog

One of the highlights of our stay at Peppers Silo Launceston was meeting Archie. Now, I must say Archie is slowing down in life as he is getting older, so his level of enthusiasm for interacting with us varied depending on the time of day. Fair enough, you come and try to pat my head when I am asleep in the morning and I am likely to ignore you too.

However, guests can check with reception staff if Archie would like to go for a walk and if he is in agreement then it’s a lovely slow meander along the riverfront. Archie is treat motivated (again, I understand this) so staff provide some incentives to keep him moving once on the walk.

If Archie isn’t awake he’s usually quite happy for some attention at reception. His version of a ‘do not disturb’ sign appeared to be retreating behind the reception desk. If only I could install one of those in our house to occasionally hide from the family when things get too much.

We were hosted for our stay at Peppers Silo Launceston but as always, our opinions are our own. We hope that the photos and video tour showcase the wonderful accessibility and character of this unique hotel.

If you are wondering what else we did while in Launceston aside from walk Archie, you can catch up below.
