It’s good to know that not all accessible equipment costs a fortune. Sometimes small and inexpensive aids can be of great assistance. My parent’s mobility is declining and I find that both of them need something to help them stand up with greater ease, particularly when getting into or out of the car. We recently got the Handybar and Swivel Seat Cushion to make getting into the car easier for them. I wasn’t sure how much of a difference it would actually make but as low cost items (both under $50) it seemed like it was worth a try. We found that these two aids do make getting into the car easier so I thought I’d share a review.

Aids to make getting into a car easier – Handybar & Swivel Seat Cushion
We were looking to get the Handybar by itself but then someone suggested also getting the Swivel Seat Cushion as the combination may make getting into and out of the car easier.

The Handybar simply hooks into the latch either on the passenger or driver’s door and helps with stability but also allows someone to lever themselves out of the car with greater ease. No modifications to the car are needed.

I was a little sceptical about how a cushion could help my parents get in and out of the car but I’ve given it a try and the swivel action does make it easier to swing your legs in and out of the car. We found you need to place the cushion quite close to the car seat’s edge otherwise it didn’t work as well.

The Swivel Seat Cushion is also nice and soft and the base has a non-slip surface.

After several family members giving the aids a go the verdict is in and we all agree that the Handybar and Swivel Seat Cushion can make getting into and out of a car easier. Obviously how successful they are will depend on a person’s level of disability but we think it’s worth considering for anyone with limited mobility or even for someone with bad knees or hips.
This is not a sponsored post, I just thought I’d share this idea for anyone who may benefit from it.
